Cancer chemotherapy are drugs used to treat cancers. Yes, I know you will ask, are cancers treatable? Well, well many are treatable but not curable by chemotherapy. A few are curable by chemotherapy.

The word chemotherapy on its own, means a cure that is being effected by the use of chemicals (drugs).

We have other forms of therapy.

  • Radiotherapy, which is the use of radiations from a radioactive substance to treat cancers.
  • Physiotherapy, which is the use of physical means like massage, exercise etc, to treat ailments.
  • Psychotherapy, which involves mind manipulations.

So the word, THERAPY , means cure.

How much is cancer chemotherapy in Nigeria?

It depends, the different drugs used in treatment of different cancers are different in costs. But will give a range of what to expect.

Cancer chemotherapy cost in private hospitals

In a private hospital in enugu, it costs on average, between 120,000 to 160,000 to give a single course of cancer chemotherapy.

Now it’s good you understand, cancer chemotherapy is given in courses, some are given up to six course. One course per month, some are given up to 8 courses.

So one course, in a private hospital in Enugu is around 120,000 to 160,000. Multiply it by let’s say 6 courses, you will be having between 720,000 to 960,000.

In a place like Lagos and Abuja , you should expect something higher. Something between 150,000 to 250,000 per course. And I think that should be the highest. So if you are, or you have someone preparing for a cancer chemotherapy, budgeting like 150,000 to 250,000 will not be bad.

You can also transport to another cheaper state and get it done, if the price range and miscellaneous expenses are covered Still remain cheaper than your current state.

Note: Some may cost way higher ,some may be cheaper. It all depends on the drug that is being used and the cancer in question.

Seriously treatment of cancer is not a one man thing. It’s a very disabling sickness.

How much is cancer chemotherapy in government Hospitals in Nigeria.

The cost of cancer chemotherapy in government hospitals in Nigeria are lower than the costs in private hospitals for obvious reasons.

You will be budgeting like an average of 60,000 to to 120,000 depending on the type and location of the hospital.

NB: The money is in Nigerian naira. AND it covers all expenses including

  • Cost of drug
  • Cost of admission for the chemotherapy, because you will be admitted for it
  • Cost of premedications: These are drugs given you to counter the side effects of the chemotherapy.
  • The service charge of the doctor.
